STEP 9 - MILD HEARTBURN

MILD HEARTBURN is a feeling of burning discomfort in the chest and is caused by the regurgitation of gastric acid from the stomach into the esophagus. It usually happens after eating certain foods or meals and can feel worse when lying down or bending over.

If the ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus (that opens and closes to let food in when we eat), is weak, or if certain foods that trigger mild heartburn are eaten very regularly, mild heartburn can occur regularly.

Foods that can trigger mild heartburn include:

• Coffee

• Cold drinks

• Fatty or spicy foods

• Large meals

• Chocolate

• Alcohol

• Citrus foods

Certain activities can also trigger episodes of mild heartburn:

• Exercising too soon after eating.

• Being pregnant.

• Being overweight or obese.

• Eating a large meal.

• Taking certain medications.
